New year, new Netflix. Sure, the streamer is constantly switching up its catalogue, moving titles on and off, but arguably the biggest change to the platform at the start of 2025 is its movement into live sports. Or, in this case, ‘sports’, as World Wrestling Entertainment flagship program, Raw, debuts as a streaming entity. Have the Netflix servers buffed up enough to welcome millions of fans each week without issues? We’ll see!
Elsewhere in January, there’s an action-comedy heralding the return to acting of two big-name stars, a new stop-motion romp from the weirdo geniuses at Aardman, a gritty western miniseries, the second seasons from a pair of shows you may or may not have even heard of, and a documentary about a ’90s talk show that featured almost as many fake fights as WWE: The Jerry Springer Show.

Don't Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever
Most guys react to a midlife crisis by buying a sports car or getting really into pickleball. Tech bro Bryan Johnson has instead spent millions on procedures to reverse the aging process, and so far succeeded in making himself look like an android with human skin stretched around its exoskeleton. Filmmaker Chris Smith, director of Netflix’s Fyre Festival doc, asks the pertinent question: what is this dude’s deal?

Cunk on Life
On the hilarious mockumentary series Cunk on Earth, Diane Morgan portrays Philomena Cunk, a sort of unthinking man’s David Attenborough who explores the mysteries of human evolution, understands none of it, yet relays her findings with the droll confidence of a museum docent. In this spinoff special, she asks even deeper philosophical questions about the nature of life on Earth, and proves to be even more confused.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Any new film from the loveable kooks at Aardman Animation is cause for celebration, especially if it stars goofy inventor Wallace and his trusty beagle. In the stop-motion duo’s first feature film since 2005, a villain from their past returns for revenge in a riff on Cape Fear that also involves artificially-intelligent garden gnomes. Great to have them back, truly.

WWE Raw
Netflix has dabbled in wrestling-themed content before – see GLOW, the Mr McMahon docuseries, etc. – and now it’s getting the actual thing, as World Wrestling Entertainment’s long-running flagship program comes to streaming. If you’re a lapsed fan of the fake-fighting arts, this is a good time to jump back in, as the company starts the build toward its biggest event of the year, WrestleMania.

Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action
The ’90s were the golden age of trash TV, and daytime staple The Jerry Springer Show sat at the top of the heap. Hosted by the former mayor of Cincinnati, it explored the important topics of the day, such as ‘Who is the baby daddy?’ and ‘Should a man be allowed to marry a horse?’, and often culminated in stage-clearing brawls in front of a raucous studio audience. Could there have been a darker side, though? This two-part docuseries investigates.

American Primeval
Peter Berg goes Yellowstone-core with this miniseries about ‘the birth of the American West’. Apparently, he’s also still trying to make Taylor Kitsch happen, casting the former Friday Night Lights star as a tortured frontiersman among a group of emigrants looking to settle in the untamed wilderness of Utah circa the mid-19th century. The show is said to centre around the 1857 Meadow Mountain Massacre, in which Mormon settlers slaughtered an entire wagon train passing through the territory. Sounds harrowing.

Back in Action
In the tradition of Spy Kids and The Incredibles, a family’s domestic idyll is upturned when it’s revealed that the parents are living a double life – in this case, as ex-CIA operatives. Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz anchor this action-comedy, which appropriately represents a return to action for both stars: it’s Foxx’s first major project since his 2023 health scare and Diaz’s first since going on a self-imposed acting hiatus 10 years ago.

The Night Agent season 2
You know how, like, CBS and the USA Network have shows you’ve never heard of yet are more popular than anything you actually watch? Netflix has them, too. Behold The Night Agent, an action thriller whose first season was, for a time, the most-viewed original program on the streamer. Revolving around a top-secret shadow program of the FBI, it stars onetime JD Vance portrayer Gabriel Basso as an agent tasked with sniffing out a mole who’s infiltrated the top levels of the US government. A third season has already been ordered, naturally.

The Recruit season 2
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’s Noah Centineo brings a considerable amount of charisma to this spy series as Owen Hendricks, a cocky young CIA lawyer who quickly finds himself in over his head as he’s drawn into a tangle of international espionage. In the second season, Hendricks is on the run in South Korea, bringing him into contact with an agent from that country’s spy agency, played by Past Lives’ Teo Yoo.
