The Witcher became Netflix’s most watched original series when it first launched in December 2019.
The second season was delayed because of Covid-19 filming restrictions and an injury to lead actor Henry Cavill, but it thrilled fantasy fans when it finally debuted in December 2021.
Unsurprisingly, the show is back for another epic adventure but fans will have to wait almost a year until it hits screens.
When can I watch The Witcher season three?
The Witcher will return for a third season in summer 2023. The news was announced at Netflix’s Tudum event with a social media post telling fans: ‘The Time of Contempt is night.’
Both previous seasons of The Witcher were released in December, so this is a departure to Netflix’s wintry release strategy.
However, The Witcher fans can still get their fix of monsters and magic in December 2022 with the release of a prequel miniseries, The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Is there a trailer for The Witcher season three?
Not yet! Trailers for both of the previous seasons of The Witcher debuted around five months prior to the series landing on the platform.
Expect to see a trailer sometime between December and next April.
Who is in the cast of The Witcher?
Henry Cavill returns as monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, a monster-hunter with enhanced magical and supernatural abilities.
Freya Allan will also be back as Ciri, the crown princess of Cintra who is destined to be with Geralt. Anya Chalotra will return again as Yennefer of Vengerberg, a quarter-elf sorceress.
Expect to also see the return of actor Joey Batey as the travelling bard, who is sure to have a new tune or two for the third season.
Outside of The Witcher, Cavill can next be seen as Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming sequel to Netflix hit movie Enola Holmes.
Allan has recently been confirmed to star in the 2024 sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
What will happen in The Witcher season three?
Netflix has released an official plot summary for the third season of The Witcher.
It reads: ‘As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.
‘Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery.
They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.’
Where was season three of The Witcher filmed?
Season three entered production in March at Laghi di Fusine, an icy lake in northern Italy. Filming then moved to the Predjama Castle in Slovenia and seaside locations in Croatia, before returning to the production’s base at Longcross Studios in England and the surrounding countryside in Surrey.
Midway through production, filming took place in locations across Wales and Morocco.
The production wrapped in September, with Guildford Cathedral being transformed into a royal palace.
According to fansite Redanian Intelligence, Cavill wrote a letter to the crew of The Witcher. ‘What a season this has been! I just wanted to thank you all for your determination and dedication through a tough shoot,’ he said. ‘Hopefully you can all get some well deserved rest.’
Executive producer Steve Gaub confirmed filming had wrapped with a behind-the-scenes Instagram post of a skull on a bookshelf.
