When it comes to predicting upcoming travel trends, some are better equipped for gazing into the crystal ball than others. Take holiday rental titan Airbnb, for example. With access to mind-boggling amounts of data on millions of travel bookings around the world, their predictions are certainly worth paying a bit of attention to.

In a recent report, Airbnb summed up the past year’s travel trends, noting that everything from international travel to pool holidays had made a comeback in the past 12 months. The year also saw Airbnb launch a bunch of new categories, letting you search for anything from entire Mediterranean islands to actual UFOs.

The report also looked ahead, to highlight ten destinations Airbnb thinks will dominate travel next year. The predictions are based on the increase in search volume for locations compared to in 2021.

Top of the pile is the Spanish coastal city of MalagaLong known for its beaches and sunshine, these days it’s also getting a rep for its piping hot cultural scene (check out its Picasso Museum, Carmen Thyssen Museum and branch of the Pompidou Centre) and fascinating history.

The rest of the top ten features some surprising inclusions, not least three Brazilian beach cities – FlorianópolisPorto Seguro and Salvador – and a number of locations in New Zealand and Australia, both of are bouncing back after spending chunks of last year closed to international travel.

Here are Airbnb’s top ten destinations in full for 2023.

  1. Málaga, Spain
  2. Sydney, Australia
  3. Melbourne, Australia
  4. Auckland, New Zealand
  5. Bangkok, Thailand
  6. Queenstown, New Zealand
  7. Florianópolis, Brazil
  8. Porto Seguro, Brazil
